Blair and Ásgrímsson meet at 10 Downing Street

The Icelandic and British prime ministers met this morning at the British prime minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street in London.

According to Morgunbladid’s website, among other things they discussed defense issues and the possible entry of Iceland into the EU.

Halldór briefed Blair on the state of the defense negotiations with the US and emphasized the importance of Iceland to the common defences of NATO. Blair asked about Iceland’s possible entry to the EU to which Halldór replied it was not “currently on the agenda.”

The prime ministers also discussed the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The meeting this morning was the first official meeting of the prime minister’s of the two countries since the mid-seventies.

In connection with Halldór’s visit to the UK, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), took out a one page color advertisement in the London daily The Times today protesting Iceland’s whaling for “scientific” purposes. The ad consists of a picture of Halldór dressed as a butcher and serving a large plate of whale meat. The picture is accompanied by a statement from the IFAW.

Tonight, Halldór will attend the match of soccer teams Chelsea and Barcelona at Chelsea’s stadium in London. According to Fréttabladid, Halldór predicts a 3-1 win for Chelsea. Icelander Eidur Smári Gudjohnsen plays for Chelsea.
