The opening of the Bláfjöll ski resort was postponed yesterday, but operators are now aiming to welcome visitors tomorrow, Friday, December 20.
Open this weekend
The planned opening of the Bláfjöll ski resort, marking the start of the winter season, was postponed yesterday due to high winds. Bláfjöll is the most popular ski resort in Iceland’s capital area.
Speaking to Mbl.is yesterday, Einar Bjarnason, operations manager at Bláfjöll, stated that he hoped to open Bláfjöll over the weekend, adding that he would likely spend the day grooming the slopes to stabilise the snow.

As reported by Mbl.is today, operators at Bláfjöll now aim to open tomorrow. “They hope to open several slopes, including the Queen, the King, as well as a few children’s slopes,” Mbl.is notes, adding that staff had busied themselves yesterday, preparing the lifts and slopes for use.
As previously reported, the snow-production system in Bláfjöll, which was introduced last year and includes eight snow cannons, is expected to ensure that the resort opens before Christmas.
Last year’s first opening day was December 21.
“Ninety-five per cent of the snow on the slopes is man-made, and we are ready to open as soon as the weather allows,” Einar told Mbl.is yesterday, noting that snow production had been ongoing in Bláfjöll in recent weeks.
