Björk’s Karaoke Marathon Results in 46,000 Signatures

The karaoke marathon launched by Björk and her campaign group The Voice of the Nation on Thursday spurred thousands of people to sign a petition where the Icelandic government is urged to prevent the acquisition of Icelandic energy company HS Orka to Canadian Magma Energy and review the policy on the ownership of natural resources.

More than 46,000 signatures have now been collected, which is much higher than the goal of 35,000 signatures which, according to Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir, was the minimum in order for the government to take the petition seriously.

“It is a bit like an organic art performance. Now karaoke events are popping up around the country so we are going to let it roll until they are finished and then hand the petition over to Jóhanna. But the exact date hasn’t been decided,” Oddný Eir Aevarsdóttir, a member of the campaign group, told Morgunbladid.
