Minister for the Environment Jónína Bjartmarz requested yesterday that the public broadcasting network RÚV’s news program, Kastljós, correct its coverage of her son’s girlfriend being granted Icelandic citizenship and apologize.
Bjartmarz sent a letter to RÚV’s director Páll Magnússon with her request, where she describes Kastljós’ reporting as “offensive and ridiculous,” Fréttabladid reports.
The minister claims the coverage was unprofessional and biased and that information was falsified. She further states that Kastljós failed in its obligations and that its work methods were in violation of public broadcasting laws and the ethical regulations of the Union of Journalists in Iceland.
Bjartmarz says Kastljós was obviously trying to defame her reputation and cause her party, the Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkurinn), to lose support before the elections tomorrow.
The minister says she will bring charges against Kastljós for their reporting before the ethical committee of the Union of Journalists if she does not receive an apology and a correction regarding the coverage of her son’s girlfriend being granted citizenship.
Bjartmarz’ letter was also sent to Thórhallur Gunnarsson, the program director for Kastljós, who said the program would stand by its reporting.
