Bjarni Benediktsson to Be PM?

Iceland’s most influential television personality and political blogger Egill Helgason wrote in his blog post today on that the one reason for the government pushing through the Minister of Foreign Affairs Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson’s proposal to withdraw from European Union talks is that the larger party in the ruling coalition, the Independence Party, is tired of the Progressive Party which has continued to lose supporters since last year’s election.

Egill speculates that to become prime minister, the chair of the Independence Party and minister of finance, Bjarni Benediktsson, has to make one sacrifice: to stop EU membership talks, a priority of the Progressive Party.

Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson would then switch chairs with Bjarni, Egill wrote.
