Birna’s Family Thanks for Support

Birna Brjánsdóttir’s parents and brother posted a Facebook message yesterday to express their gratitude to the support they received in connection with Birna’s funeral.

The message reads, “We, the parents and brother of Birna—Brjánn, Sigurlaug and Logi Fannar—sincerely thank you for all given support and contributions in connection with the funeral services for our daughter and sister Birna Brjánsdóttir and the funeral reception. All those who contributed to make this a beautiful moment—artists, individuals, companies and the Icelandic Coast Guard. All those who with their generous work and contribution helped us create a wonderful moment in memory of our dear daughter and sister and to show her due respect. All of that warms the heart in this time of sorrow.”

Birna’s violent death was a shock to the people of Iceland where murders are rare. She disappeared on January 14, and her body was found on the shore of Reykjanes eight days later. One man is in police custody, suspected in her death.

Hundreds of volunteers took part in the search for her, and thousand attended a memorial gathering in downtown Reykjavík on January 25.
