The seismic activity in Bárðarbunga was greater last night than the night before. Between midnight and 6 am about 500 quakes were recorded.
Two earthquakes of magnitude over five were measured, one 5.3 just after midnight about 2.5 km southeast of Bárðarbunga and another of 5.2 just before 3 am 9.6 km east-northeast of Bárðarbunga.
The big quakes are believed to be the result of changes in pressure, caused by the progression of the magma, visir.is reports.
There are also earthquakes in the Askja region, including one of magnitude 4.5 around 2 am. It’s the biggest quake to hit Askja since 1992, ruv.is reports.
Still there is no indication of an eruption. The activity peaked at 2 am but has been rather similar since then. The activity seems to be moving slowly towards the Askja volcano region.
