Jón Gnarr, chairman of the Best Party, has revealed that discussions took place with the Social Democrats yesterday on forming a coalition in the Reykjavík City Council. Gnarr said he is demanding the chair of mayor and he believes Dagur B. Eggertsson, chairman of the Social Democrats in Reykjavík, will agree to that.

“We aren’t aiming towards anything, really. It was a mutual decision within the Best Party’s central committee that we would try this first,” Gnarr told Morgunbladid.
“We haven’t discussed the division of projects although we have discussed a range of topics. I haven’t made any ultimate demands on becoming mayor,” said Eggertsson.
Together the two parties have a majority in the council, nine council members out of 15. The Best Party earned six seats in the election on Saturday and the Social Democrats earned three, ruv.is reports.
Gnarr said the atmosphere had been good during discussions, although he and his associates had to begin the meeting by assuring the Social Democrats that they were being serious and that their candidacy was not just one big joke.
He explained that many Social Democrats had been skeptical but that he had managed to reassure Eggertsson.
However, Eggertsson has yet to watch the American television series The Wire and Gnarr recommends that he does. Throughout the election, Gnarr has said that he will not consider a coalition with anyone who hasn’t seen The Wire.
Negotiations will continue today.
