The eruption in Grímsvötn has not been accessible since the ash cloud is so widespread. Some have likened it to an atom bomb mushroom. Ómar Ragnarsson, entertainer and media person, has said that the smoke “drowns within itself”. This means that it is not easy to get good areal photos of the eruption.
Jón Gústafsson went by helicopter to the eruption and was able to shoot the following video, which shows lightnings coming from the smoke every few seconds.
