Beer Cheapest in Reykjavík

According to GoEuro.com’s recently published 2015 Beer Price Index, out of the capitals of all five Nordic countries, the price of beer is lowest in Reykjavík.

Iceland’s metropolis nonetheless only comes in at 39 least expensive out of 75 cities listed, while Oslo peaks at 72—an improvement from last year, when Norway’s capital topped the list—followed by Helsinki at 68, Copenhagen at 58 and Stockholm at 48.

GoEuro.com reports the average price of a 33cl beer in a Reykjavík bottle shop—calculated by averaging the prices of the five top import brands and the most popular domestic ones—as USD 1.53 or about ISK 200 ISK. The average price for the same size beer served at a bar is then said to be USD 4.95, which comes to about ISK 650.

However, a survey of the most popular beers at Vínbúðin, The State Alcohol and Tobacco Company of Iceland, found the average price of a 33cl beer to be closer to USD 1.90 or ISK 250, RÚV reports.

The numbers given by GoEuro.com are also significantly at odds with those reported by online magazine Thrillist in 2014, which listed Iceland as the third most expensive country in the world to buy beer, and gave the average bar price of beer in Reykjavík as USD 7.37 or ISK 970.
