Beef Imports to Iceland Increase Tenfold

The import of beef to Iceland has increased tenfold in the first six months of the year, compared to the same period last year. From January to July 2013, 49 tons of beef were imported to Iceland, while this year, it has jumped to 535 tons.

The meat imported is mostly from German cows for making ground beef, while frozen ground beef from Ireland makes up the second-largest product import, Fréttablaðið reports.

The production of beef in Iceland has not increased in 13 years while the consumption has increased extensively with the sharp increase in the number of tourists—one million are estimated to visit Iceland this year.

Icelandic farmers are not able to cope with the rise in demand.
