Beached whale in south Iceland

A dead whale was found on a beach near Thorlákshöfn in south Iceland yesterday. The animal appears to be a sperm whale and is ten to 12 meters long. The cause of death is unclear.

Police in the nearby town of Selfoss called Halldór Rúnólfsson, a senior veterinarian, to the scene to determine the species of the whale and what may have caused its death, Fréttabladid reports.

Representatives of the Marine Research Institute, the Environment and Food Agency of Iceland and the Icelandic Institute of Natural History are also expected to come to the scene.
