Baugur CEO slams Ekstra Bladet report

By Iceland Review

Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson, CEO of Baugur Group, which holds vast assets in Denmark, the UK and elsewhere, has released a statement in which he strongly objects to claims by Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet, which he says are false. This is reported in all the main media.

In his statement, Jóhannesson says that it is unclear what the Danish journalists mean to achieve with their negative reports, but that Baugur Group plans to take legal action to defend itself. Furthermore that Baugur Group has tried repeatedly to have their objections published in the paper, but without success.

Ekstra Bladet recently published extensive reports on the investments of Icelandic entrepreneurs abroad, suggesting among other things that their capital was illegally obtained and that they had ties to the Russian mafia. Authorities on the subject have refuted these claims and pointed out that the paper’s reports are badly prepared and lacking in evidence.
