In a turn of bad luck, a group of children from the Westfjords have been stuck in the same place on the same journey, on the same weekend, three years in a row.
While winter driving in the rugged Westfjords region can never be assured, it must still be considered bad luck that the young squad from KFÍ basketball club in Ísafjörður has been stuck in Hólmavík due to road conditions on their way back from the Nettó championships on the Reykjanes peninsula for three years in a row.
The competition is held on the first weekend in March each year and Ísafjörður always sends a coach-load of basketball-mad kids along, because KFÍ is among the best basketball clubs in the country, for both the men’s and women’s game.
BB.is reports that the children may be unlucky to be trapped by weather on their way home, but that it only takes a couple of phone calls to secure the local sports hall as accommodation, and that the residents of Hólmavík take very good care of them while they wait for the roads to be cleared.
This winter has been unusually stormy in Iceland, with an average of one storm hitting the country every three days since November.
