About 60 earthquakes have been detected in and around Bárðarbunga volcano during the last 24 hours, none of which were above 5.0 in magnitude, as stated in the Icelandic Met Office’s update this morning. Around ten of the quakes were between magnitude 4.0 and 5.0.
In the 24 hours prior, also around 60 earthquakes were observed in the Bárðarbunga area, slightly fewer than the day before. One quake exceeded magnitude 5.0 and five quakes had magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0. The magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit at 10:39 pm on Monday.
Both today and yesterday, the Icelandic Met Office reported low seismic activity is in the dike intrusion, which connects the volcano, which lies under Vatnajökull glacier, with the Holuhraun eruption site.
Not much could be seen of the eruption on webcams due to poor visibility. However, a steam plume could be seen on a webcam on Vaðalda, a mountain in the northeastern highlands with a view of the eruption site.
The new lava at Holuhraun now measures 70 square km (27 square miles) and comes close to Iceland’s largest lake, Þórisvatn at 88 square km, in size.
