The earth is still trembling around Bárðarbunga. At around 5 am on Thursday morning an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 hit the rim of the dreaded volcano’s crater. Just half an hour earlier an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was released in the region, according to mbl.is.
An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 shook the crater in Bárðarbunga just after 10.30 pm on Wednesday night. This is the biggest quake since 8 am Wednesday morning when a tremor of magnitude 5.2 occurred in the area.
In the past 48 hours 22 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or more have occurred in Bárðarbunga.
The surface keeps sinking at the rate of about half a meter (a foot and a half) per day. The total sinking since the beginning of the activity is about 27 meters (90 feet).
