One enterprising hair stylist in Kópavogur has taken it upon himself to offer a service he believes is sorely needed, Vísir reports: haircuts without small talk.

Styrmir Sigurðsson, a stylist at the salon Space in Kópavogur, took notice of repeated complaints on social media from people saying they didn’t appreciate being made a captive participant in a conversation they had no interest in having just because someone was cutting their hair.

The silent type

“There’s always posts popping up on Facebook and Twitter where people are complaining that a barber never shut up,” he told reporters. “So I thought to myself that their must be a market for removing this ‘uncomfortable factor’ that comes from having to ask someone to be quiet, and I added this to our booking system.”

According to Styrmir, this service–referred to as “the silent type”–has been very well received, with “an unbelievable number of men” requesting it. He added that he can relate to the discomfort of having a chatty barber, feeling the pressure sometimes to think of something to talk about in the midst of an uncomfortable silence.

Your reasons are your own

Styrmir says a person might order the silent type for any number of reasons, none of which are any of his business.

“Maybe you had a rough day at work,” he said. “Or you have a young child at home who isn’t sleeping. It’s not actually my business why you would order ‘the silent type’; you just show up here and knock yourself out for thirty minutes.”
