The headline reads, “Baby Boom Nine Months after the Iceland Sensation.” Halldór Baldursson, cartoonist for Fréttablaðið was quick to pick this up, drawing a picture of Reykjavík with the sound Húh, made famous by the Viking clap of Icelandic fans, emitting from bedroom windows.
Clearly, as the German newspaper pointed out, not only the players scored goals. What can be verified is that the surprise victory when Iceland beat England 2-1 in football in Nice at the EURO 2016 in France did occur nine months ago, or June 27. A call to the maternity ward at Landspítali National University Hospital this morning did, however, reveal that no figures have yet been issued regarding the number of births there over the weekend.
True or not, the story has been a source of inspiration and entertainment.
