Avalanche on Road to Siglufjörður

An avalanche fell on the Siglufjarðarvegur road to Siglufjörður, North Iceland, late last night, according to RÚV. Police in Siglufjörður were called out to assist a woman who discovered the avalanche had fallen on the road. She had a baby in the car, but was able to find shelter in the Strákagöng tunnel after she had parked the car during a storm. The police transported her and the baby to Siglufjörður, but left her the car behind.

The Ólafsfjarðarmúli road to Ólafsfjörður is also closed due to avalanche risk. Conditions are very windy in northeast, with wind speeds in excess of 20 m/sec in some areas.

Many roads in North and East Iceland are impassable, due to blowing snow and poor visibility. Fjarðarheiði mountain pass to Seyðisfjörður has been closed, as well as Möðrudalsöræfi between Egilsstaðir and Mývatn.
