The road under the slope Súðavíkurhlíð between Ísafjörður and Súðavík in the West Fjords has been closed since 1 am last night because of avalanche risk. The Icelandic Met Office has issued a strong gale warning for the region with wind speed expected to exceed 20 m/s.
It’s unclear when it will be safe to reopen the road. The police told ruv.is this morning that the weather in Ísafjörður was bad and that the forecast for the day did not look promising.
The weather outlook is for a northerly wind of between 13 and 20 m/s and snow and snowshowers but a lighter wind and fairer weather in the south. Tomorrow the weather is expected to be similar with the temperature ranging from 0 to -5°C (32-23°F).
