Auto Body Shop Fire near Downtown Reykjavík

Fire fighters have extinguished a fire that erupted last night at an auto body shop on Grettisgata, near downtown Reykjavík, reports. Police are now in charge of the scene, but it’s not yet safe to enter the building.

Two fire fighters are still pumping water out of the basement, but most of the fire had been put out by 4 am. Detective Chief Inspector Vignir Oddgeirsson from the forensics department stated, “We’re still waiting for it to be safe to enter and take a look. We’ll coordinate that with the fire department. We need to think about factors such as pieces collapsing from the roof, and the building needs to cool down.”

Nothing is known about the source of the fire, but the building is severely damaged. Many residents in the area left their homes last night due to smoke from burning rubber.

About 100 people took part in the operations of fire fighters and police, according to RÚV.
