Auction to Support Yemen in Reykjavík

An auction will be held in landmark building Perlan in Reykjavík tomorrow to raise money for impoverished women and children in Yemen. A lamp designed by Ólafur Elíasson will be auctioned off as well as a dress donated by Björk.

Björk wore the dress, which is designed by Alexander McQueen, in her video for “Alarm Call” in 1998, Fréttabladid reports.

“It is great how everyone has been such good sports and been prepared to contribute to the auction,” said auction organizer Áslaug Hulda Jónsdóttir. She is especially satisfied with the lamp. “It is fantastic to have a piece by Ólafur Elíasson in the auction, who is one of our leading artists.”

His work is called “Local Career Lamp” and was originally designed for the art café Karriere Bar in Copenhagen. The opening bid is expected to be ISK 1.3 million (USD 16,000, EUR 11,000).

Another object which Jónsdóttir hopes people will vie for is the shirt that Ólafur Stefánsson, captain of the Icelandic men’s handball team, wore during the final in the Olympics last Sunday, signed by every member of the team.

Earlier reports speculated whether the dress which Björk would be donating to the auction was her infamous swan dress, designed by Marjan Pejoski, which she wore to the 2001 Oscars ceremony and some fashion gurus have named the biggest red-carpet disaster in history.

Bids will be received at Perlan between 10 am and 6 pm on Saturday.
