Attack on Police Officers in Reykjavík Planned?

By Iceland Review

The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police is launching an investigation into the case of the four police officers who were attacked in downtown Reykjavík on Friday, among other things, to determine whether the attack was premeditated.

Police suspect the attack may be drug related as the police officers belonged to the drug department’s street squad, Morgunbladid reports.

Chief constable Fridrik Smári Björgvinsson said the five attackers, who are all Lithuanian, have lived in Iceland for different periods of time and one of them has been arrested before for attacking a policeman.

According to Morgunbladid, two of the men work for the same construction company, but not all of them have employment. A police officer, who would not be named, said the attackers had not been “regular workers” judging by the way they were fighting.

Three of the police officers who were attacked have returned to their duties, though they have not recovered completely. The fourth suffered severe blows to the head and it is unclear when he will be able to return to work.
