Asylum Seekers Arrested at Reykjavík Harbor

Police arrested two asylum seekers in the harbor area of transport company Eimskip in Sundahöfn harbor in Reykjavík between 4 and 5 am last night on suspicion of having tried to sneak onboard a transport vessel bound for North America.

Security in the area was significantly increased some months ago due to numerous attempts by asylum seekers to leave the country as stowaways, visir.is reports.

The two men, who were arrested last night, were taken to prison and will be questioned today.

The number of asylum seekers in Iceland has increased significantly in recent months and years and the lengthy time it takes to process their application has been under criticism.
