Asylum Seeker Sets Himself on Fire

An asylum seeker from Macedonia, staying in housing provided by the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration, poured gasoline over himself yesterday, outside the building, and set himself on fire, RÚV reports.

The Reykjavík Metropolitan Police were called out to Víðines, a building on the outskirts of Reykjavík, yesterday afternoon, and when they arrived, the man had suffered severe burns. He was transported to hospital, but no information has been provided by Landspítali National University Hospital regarding his condition.

Police had already been called to the same building at noon yesterday, when another asylum seeker had threatened to injure himself. He was not hurt, but was transported to the police station while his case was being discussed.

Residents and staff in Víðines were offered crisis counseling.
