Ash Wednesday Celebrated

It’s Ash Wednesday, which means that children all over Iceland are getting dressed up in costumes and heading out to gather candy. There’s no such thing as free candy however, the kids have to sing for their sweets! These costumed kids were just a small sample of the crowds livening up the city centre today.

Kids have been dressing up for Ash Wednesday for most of the 20th century and Ash Wednesday celebrations were documented as early as the beginning of the 19th century. To mark the occasion, RÚV published some footage of kids celebrating Ash Wednesday in Akureyri in 1967.
