Ash Fall from Iceland Volcano Reaches Selfoss

The ash fall from the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier has now reached the town of Selfoss to the west of the eruption site. The ash cloud stretches to the west and southwest; there is constant ash fall in Fljótshlíd and Hvolsvöllur.

This is the first time ash has fallen in significant quantities to the west of the eruption site since the eruption began in Eyjafjallajökull one month ago, ruv.is reports.

There was extensive ash fall in the countryside below the Eyjafjöll mountain range yesterday, which lies to the south of the eruption site.

According to the police in Hvolsvöllur, it was almost completely dark between Holtsá and Skógar. In some areas the visibility was only two meters. People stayed inside.

Keflavík International Airport was closed last night due to the ash from Eyjafjallajökull. Airplanes coming from the US today will land in Akureyri in north Iceland but all departures scheduled from Keflavík this morning have been canceled.

The situation will be reviewed at noon.
