Passengers traveling through Keflavík International Airport tonight through June 3 are asked to show up at the airport three hours before departure while the airport adapts to a new baggage handling system.
A new baggage handling hall will be taken into use, but until the current system has been connected to the new addition, all baggage will have to be sorted manually, RÚV reports.
The present baggage handling system will be disconnected at 6 pm tonight, and the new system is expected to be in operation by morning flights on June 4.
A news release from Isavia, the company which runs the airport, states, “The new system has the ability to handle twice as much baggage as the old one and is a necessary addition to the present system. A new hall provides a much improved work place for baggage handlers and the possibility to use baggage containers used in wide body aircraft, such as the ones Icelandair and WOW have added to their fleets … The new building which houses the baggage handling area is 3,000 m2 [32,000 sq ft] in size, of which the new hall is 2,100 m2 [23,000 sq ft] .”
During the adjustment to the new system, June 1-3, Isavia offers passengers a free bus ride on the first buses departing from Reykjavík. They leave at 2:15 am, one of them a Reykjavík Excursions bus from BSÍ and the other one a Grayline bus from Holtagarðar.
