Aron replaced Alexander as the most popular name for boys, which dropped from sixth to eighth place, and Emilía kicked Anna, the most popular girls’ name in 2009, down from first to fourth to sixth place.

According to Statistics Iceland, most children born in 2010 were also given a middle name. Thór was by far the most popular middle name among boys, followed by Freyr and Logi, while María placed first as a middle name for girls, with Ósk and Rós being the runners-up. These names have all been popular in past years as well.

When the population as a whole is taken into account, the most popular given names have not changed significantly since 2006.

Among men, Jón is the most common first name, and Jón Thór the most popular double name. Among women, Gudrún remains the most popular name while Anna María is the most common of double name combinations.

Birthdays in Iceland are not evenly spread over the year; fewer persons are born in the winter months, from October to March, than during other months.
