Armed Soldiers Guard their Ship in Reykjavík Harbor

Some pedestrians in Reykjavík were startled by a rare sight this week—armed soldiers. British military ship HMS Exeter is currently docked in Reykjavík harbor because of a conference on the Arctic Convoys, and the soldiers onboard are carrying guns.

“They are guards who are watching over the ship and they have permission to carry weapons onboard,” information officer of Iceland’s Foreign Ministry Urdur Gunnarsdóttir told 24 Stundir. “But they are not allowed to carry weapons to shore.”

“We have not received any complaints [about the armed soldiers] but if people think it is uncomfortable or unsuitable they naturally have to contact us at the Foreign Ministry and let us know. We will then discuss it with the British Embassy or the captain,” Gunnarsdóttir said.
