Armed Robbery in Hafnarfjörður

Two men have been arrested in connection with a robbery in the jewelry store Gullsmiðjan, Hafnarfjörður, RÚV reports. The first arrest took place in Keflavík last night, the second in Reykjavík this morning. The Special Unit of the National Police Commissioner was called out in both arrests.

The loot is yet to be found, but is believed to be worth millions of ISK.

Yesterday, shortly after 5:00 pm, two men, armed with an axe, robbed jewelry from Gullsmiðjan on Lækjargata, Hafnarfjörður, according to Vísir. The robbers, who wore masks, threatened an employee in his fifties with an axe, but he managed to escape. He was not hurt, but very shaken. The robbery was caught on video.

The thieves then fled the scene in a white Nissan 4×4 and sped away, slamming into another car, but without injuring anyone. Half an hour later, the vehicle was found abandoned by the Grindavík exit on Reykjanesbraut. One of the suspects was arrested late last night in Keflavík after shooting with an air gun at police from a short distance. The vehicle was believed to be stolen.

The robbers are said to have exhibited very threatening behavior, not only toward the employee, but also toward others in the vicinity.
