Two SUVs drove from Reykjavík towards Grímsvötn on Sunday night. They came within one kilometer of the eruption and took a video. You can see many flashes of lightning in the one minute video.
Thór E Bachmann told mbl.is that the video was filmed between 4 and 6 AM on Sunday morning. A group of ten were together on the trip in two SUVs.
It was not safe to get out because of ash and rocks raining onto the vehicles. “It was quite risky for a while.” Then the weather was really bad, stormy and dark. The group had to stay in one place before they could escape.
