Another man was arrested yesterday in connection with the case of the police officer from the narcotics division of the Greater Reykjavík Police who has been detained since December 29 on suspicion of a serious violation on the job, RÚV reports.
The man arrested yesterday, who is about forty years old, has been convicted of a drug offense. It is not clear how long he will be detained.
No information has yet been provided, neither by the Greater Reykjavík Police nor by the state prosecutor, who is in charge of the case, about the specifics of the police officer’s alleged offense.
According to RÚV, it has been confirmed that the police officer is suspected of inappropriate communication with offenders.
Vísir quotes Police Chief Sigríður Björk Guðmundsdóttir as saying, “There had been rumors about leaks from the narcotics division, although it wasn’t known who was behind them.”
Fréttablaðið claims to have information that the suspected police officer, who is currently in isolation at Litla-Hraun prison, received payments in exchange for information from the office of the police. Sigríður Björk said she couldn’t confirm that: “There can be various incentives behind such cases. There may have been a coercion no one knows about. Nothing has been proven against him, and the case is just still being investigated.”
Another police officer was transferred to a different department last year on suspicion of a leak. Sigríður Björk could neither confirm whether that police officer’s case is also being investigated by the state prosecutor, nor confirm whether the two cases are directly related.
The police officer who is in isolation will be in custody until Friday. His defense lawyer has complained that his client has not been given a chance to respond to the charges, despite repeated requests. He further states that police have refused to provide him with documents related to the charges.
