In the year 2009, Alexander was the most popular name for newborn boys whereas Anna was the most popular name for newborn girls, mbl.is reports.

The name Anna also ranked number one the previous year. On the other hand, in 2008 Alexander replaced Viktor as the most popular male name.
The Statistical Bureau states this in a new report.
Most of the babies given a name in the year 2009 got more than one. Thór was by far the most popular middle name amongst boys, followed by Freyr and Ingi.
Among newborn girls, María and Ósk were the most popular middle names, ranking first and second in 2009. They were followed by Líf, which replaced Rós as the third most popular female middle name.
The majority of Icelanders have more than one given name. The three most popular male combinations are Jón Thór, Gunnar Thór and Jón Ingi. For females, the three most common combinations are Anna María, Anna Margrét and Anna Kristín.
