The last days of Althingi before summer vacation are now in session and the workday is long for Iceland’s MPs. The last days of Althingi are known for being long, lively and stressful since the MPs have to finish the agenda for the winter. Yesterday the last session started at 8 am and lasted until 2:30 am the next day.
One of the resolutions Althingi reached was to condemn the Guantanamo Bay prison. A formal policy on matters of human rights violation issues, which the case of Guantanamo Bay presents, has been on the agenda and a campaign pledge of the Left-Green Movement for a long time. Morgunbladid reports
The Left-Green Movement’s MP, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, was a spokeswoman for the resolution.
It suggests that the Icelandic government should urge the US government to close down Guantanamo Bay prison because it violates human rights. Althingi believes that human rights should always be respected and the war against terror cannot justify human rights violations.
