All Midwives in Sudurnes Region Resign

The eight midwives employed at the Sudurnes Heath Institute (HSS), a region on the Reykjanes peninsula (pop. 20,000), which includes Keflavík, have resigned due to dissatisfaction with their salaries, wages and institutional agreement.

Their resignations will take effect February 1, 2008, Morgunbladid reports.

“They want higher salaries, but we have an institutional agreement that was accepted in spring 2006 [and is valid until spring 2008] and we have to comply with that agreement,” said Thórunn Benediktsdóttir, director of nursing at HSS. “We had a certain amount of money to spend on that agreement, and now there is no money left.”

Benediktsdóttir said it is unclear how HSS will react to the resignations, but that they will try to reach a compromise with the midwives. “We have to face the serious fact that they have resigned and we have to find a solution. But it is difficult when we have no money.”

Benediktsdóttir added it is unacceptable that there will be no midwives in Sudurnes after February 1 and that pregnant women in the region will be forced to find the services they require elsewhere.
