Alcan senior managers to visit Thorlákshöfn?

Senior managers from the Canadian aluminum company Alcan will visit Iceland tomorrow for a board meeting. CEO of Alcan in Iceland Rannveig Rist said they may also visit Thorlákshöfn, south Iceland, to discuss a potential smelter.

Ólafur Áki Ragnarsson, the mayor of the Ölfus community in south Iceland, to which Thorlákshöfn belongs, said Alcan had approached the community after Hafnarfjördur rejected a smelter enlargement in Straumsvík, where Alcan currently has a smelter.

“We have introduced what we have to offer,” Ragnarsson told Fréttabladid, adding Ölfus had already reached an agreement with the Icelandic consultant company Arctus ehf. regarding the construction of an aluminum factory near Thorlákshöfn, which has priority.

Ölfus has given Arctus an offer to construct an aluminum factory on a lot near the town valid for 18 months. According to the agreement, Ölfus is not to approach other parties or hand out lots within the community limits for aluminum-related projects during that period.
