Alcan in Iceland CEO Businessperson of the Year

CEO of Alcan in Iceland Rannveig Rist was named Businessperson of 2008 by business magazine Frjáls verslun yesterday. The selection committee concluded that Rist had great leadership abilities and was successful in her work as CEO.

“Rannveig has served as the CEO of the Straumsvík smelter for 12 years and has operated the company with profits the entire time that she has been at the helm. Last spring, when she spotted dark clouds on the horizon of the Icelandic economy, she decided to pay all of the smelter’s debts,” a press release from Frjáls verslun reads.

The selection committee also considers Rist a pioneer in terms of education in heavy industry and a leader for businesswomen, reports.

Rist has a degree as a mechanic, engineer and a mechanical engineer and was among the first women to graduate as a mechanical engineer from the University of Iceland. She was also the first woman to become a CEO of a company the size of Alcan in Iceland.
