Akureyri Wants Larger Airport

The town council of Akureyri in north Iceland would like the government to be responsible for enlarging the local airport and terminal as soon as possible, thus supporting a demand by the North Iceland Tourism Marketing Office.

“Year-round international flights will create a new operational basis for the tourist industry in north and east Iceland, increase revenue, innovation and development in tourism and have a positive impact on other operations in the area, especially during winter,” the town council reasons, according to Fréttabladid.

The town council believes it is natural that the project will be paid for by the state’s transport budget. It isn’t right that only the operators of the airport and its users should cover the cost, the council stated.
