Physicians at FSA, the hospital in Akureyri, northeast Iceland, are trying to secure funding to continue a study on the number of attempted suicides in the region, which, according to previous research, increased considerably between 1985 and 2003.
Previous studies conducted at the hospital revealed that attempted suicides increased every year during the period in question, with 664 cases registered in total, ruv.is reports.
Dr. Brynjólfur Ingvarsson, a psychiatrist at FSA and a professor at Akureyri University’s Health Science Department, told ruv.is it is extremely necessary to continue the research, but the hospital lacks funding and manpower.
