Sigrún Björk Jakobsdóttir will replace Kristján Thór Júlíusson as mayor of Akureyri in northeast Iceland on 9 January 2007. Never before has a woman been the mayor of Akureyri.
Júlíusson will run for MP in the general elections in May. From 9 January and until May, Júlíusson will serve as Head of Akureyri City Council, which is Jakobsdóttir’s current role. Fréttabladid reports.
Júlíusson won the primary of the constituency in northeast Iceland last week and will lead the Independence Party in northeast Iceland in the general elections in May.
