Akureyri Considers Public Bus to Airport

The domestic airline Air Iceland has asked the municipal authorities in Akureyri, North Iceland, to arrange regular bus service to and from Akureyri International Airport, as reported by RÚV. Municipal councilors are positive towards the idea.

A letter from the airline, which was discussed at a municipal council meeting last week, states that public transportation to and from the airport would be an important step in improving services for tourists. The number of foreign travelers has increased in North Iceland in the last months, particularly following the addition of direct flights from Keflavík International Airport to Akureyri.

Although the Akureyri bus routes are fairly extensive, Akureyri airport is not currently part of the route network. It is common for passengers to travel by taxi to and from the airport.

”It’s undoubtedly somewhat strange that people arriving to the north via public transport would have trouble traveling onward from the airport using public transport,” Árni Gunnarsson, managing director of Air Iceland, told RÚV.

The municipal councilors RÚV spoke with, Preben Jón Pétursson of Bright Future and Gunnar Gíslason of the Independence Party, were supportive of the idea.
