A petition is circulating in Akureyri in which the town council is urged to resign because of its decision to ban young people from camping in the town’s campsites last weekend.
In an interview with vísir.is newsweb, Birgir Torfason, a member of the movement Vinir Akureyrar which organized a festival in the town during the annual Merchants’ weekend, condemns the decision made by the city council and the mayor of Akureyri, and claims that they are incompetent.
This June, the town council had promised Vinir Akureyrar that the tent site would only restrict kids under 18 from camping without their parents during the Merchants’ weekend. The decision was made in order to prevent the last year’s out-of-control festival from being repeated, as well as to make it a more welcoming festival for families. However, according to Torfason, the town council broke its promise when it announced the new restriction less than one week before the festivities were to begin.
Torfason says that Vinir Akureyari is considering taking legal action against the town council, but a decision about a possible lawsuit is still pending.
