KEA investment company has decided to begin the construction of a 150-room hotel at Hafnarstræti 80 in Akureyri, North Iceland, according to the company’s website. This will be the largest hotel not only in Akureyri but in all of North Iceland.
KEA purchased the lot two years ago. Construction is expected to take two years, and the hotel is scheduled to open in the spring of 2019.
Halldór Jóhannsson, CEO of KEA, stated the hotel’s location offered numerous opportunities. The hotel is an answer to a rapid increase in the number of tourists in the area, and Halldór believes interest in Northeast Iceland as a tourist destination is growing.
