Akranes inhabitants complain about smelly fish factory

Over 600 inhabitants in Akranes (pop. 6,000), west Iceland, have signed a letter of complaint to the town council, demanding the operations of a local fish factory be stopped due to their bad smell.

“We can’t live like this,” Akranes resident Ketill Björnsson told Fréttabladid. “You can never leave the house with open windows and during night you have to close them all.”

“You can’t have babies sleep outside because the prams, the bed sheets and the babies’ clothes smell so bad that they become almost unusable,” Björnsson continued.

The smell is primarily caused by drying fish heads and melting fishmeal. According to the local Health Protection Committee the smell is unavoidable.

Akranes town council has met with the dissatisfied inhabitants but has not taken measures to stop the smelly operations of the fish factory.
