The number of passengers flying with domestic airline Air Iceland between the Westman Islands off Iceland’s southern coast and the mainland increased by 27 percent in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same period last year.
To meet the increasing demand the airline will offer three flights to the islands per day as of May 1, every day of the week except Wednesdays and Saturdays. There will thus by 19 scheduled flights per week between Reykjavík and the Westman Islands throughout the summer.
Air Iceland contributes the increase in passengers on this route to the extensive development of the economy and tourist industry in the Westman Islands.
Most of the passengers flying between the mainland and the Westman Islands are Icelandic, but the airline has also noticed a considerable increase in foreign tourists on this route.
