The application of Ghasem Mohmadi, an asylum seeker from Afghanistan, to reside in Iceland has been approved. Last spring, Mohmadi protested his planned deportation to Sweden under the Dublin Regulation with a hunger strike.
“It’s the best feeling I’ve ever experienced,” Mohmadi said in an interview with Fréttablaðið today in response to the news of his application for asylum in Iceland being granted.
“Iceland is one of the safest and most beautiful countries in the world,” Mohmadi added. He now intends on studying the Icelandic language.
According to the Dublin Regulation, Sweden is responsible for examining Mohmadi’s application for political asylum.
Mohmadi garnered significant media attention with his hunger strike, raising awareness of the situation of asylum seekers in Iceland, who often have to wait for a long time for an answer to their applications.
He stated only refugees who have applied for asylum can understand how he felt while waiting for his application to be processed.
