Affirmative action favors male candidate in primary

A gender based quota made it possible for a male to push a woman out of the fourth place slate at the Social Democrats primaries in Akureyri last Saturday.

According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service this is the first time the gender based quota helps a male to further his position. Lára Stefánsdóttir, chairman of the Social Democrats election council in Akureyri, said it was important for people to realize that gender based quotas can work in both ways and are not just for helping out women in politics.
