Adventurer to Cross Glacier and Drift with Ice

Italian adventurer Alex Bellini is planning to plant a capsule in a drift ice in Greenland next winter and live inside it for one year to study and raise awareness of climate change. One January 20 he will launch a solo crossing of Vatnajökull glacier on skis.

Today, on the occasion of the National Energy Authority’s 50th anniversary, Bellini will take part in a panel discussion on the effects of climate change on glaciers, Fréttablaðið reports.

Senior project manager at the National Energy Authority, Jónas Ketilsson, said the purpose of Bellini’s is to make people consider the consequences of the melting of glaciers and what they can do to counteract climate change.

It is predicted that Iceland’s glaciers will disappear in 150-200 years. The iconic Snæfellsjökull in West Iceland may even vanish in a few decades.

The capsule Bellini will live in for one year is designed to withstand natural disasters, especially tidal waves. He has previously run across the US and attempted to row on a kayak from Peru to Australia.
