Ad limitation could disadvantage RÚV

A parliamentary educational board is exploring the possibility of limiting advertisement on national broadcaster RÚV. Páll Magnússon, manager of RÚV, fears the consequences.

According to Bladid, Magnússon said that he is not against discussing the possibility of limiting the amount of advertisement broadcast on RÚV and that the national broadcaster would not necessarily suffer financial damage in the process.

But Magnússon said it is easy to see how ad limitation could disadvantage RÚV and the matter had to be evaluated first.

Sigurdur Kári Kristjánsson, MP and head of the educational board, told Bladid that most board members agree on some sort of limitation, some would even like to see a total ban on advertising on RÚV.

Kristjánsson said it was possible that the government would compensate the financial disadvantage RÚV might suffer in the process of limiting advertisement, but, he said, it might not be necessary.
